According to reports in Belgium, Arne Engels will make an early return to Glasgow after leaving the Belgium national team camp on Saturday afternoon. The midfielder had been called up for his first senior cap against Israel earlier this week but will now head back to Lennoxtown.

The reason? Belgian Red Devils Reports Engels is suspended due to an accumulation of three yellow cards during Belgium’s U21 European Championship qualifying campaign. In a bizarre rule, those bookings carry over to the senior squad, meaning he’s forced to serve his suspension with the first team.

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Engels, who only recently made his first appearance for Celtic.

The 20-year-old midfielder debuted in last weekend’s Glasgow derby against Rangers, just days after completing his record-breaking move to the Hoops. The Belgian became Celtic’s most expensive signing ever, with the club showing huge faith in his ability to make an immediate impact, coming on from the bench and seeing out 3-0 win.

During his sub appearance, Arne showed glimpses of why Celtic made such a significant investment. Engels held his own in midfield, playing with composure.

Now back in Glasgow earlier than expected, Engels will be looking to build on that promising debut. He’ll join the rest of the Celtic squad in training ahead of their upcoming clash with Hearts at Celtic Park next weekend. The Hoops have had a fantastic start to the campaign where Hearts have had a very poor run of form.

However, you can bet they will be right up for it against Celtic come next Saturday.
