Peter Grant has an alternative ‘argument’ on the penalty Rangers got vs Celtic on Sunday

Just when you think the Celtic penalty chat is all over, Peter Grant goes and throws in an alternative view that is sure to cause more debate.

We have had Kris Boyd accuse Fabio Silva of diving, Chris Sutton lambast the VAR officials for the footage that was shown to John Beaton and even Beaton himself has been criticised for not sticking to his original decision.

On top of that we have had two former top referees Dermot Gallagher and Steve Conroy both give conflicting opinions on whether the decision by VAR to intervene was correct or not.

And now, it’s the turn of Peter Grant.

Peter Grant has ‘no argument’ with Rangers penalty

Whilst the former Celtic hero agrees that the decision to award a penalty was correct, Grant also makes a claim that he would have been screaming for it if the challenge was going against Celtic.

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I was also doing a Game for Celtic TV and at first I thought it was a stonewall penalty. I must admit, I thought, ‘Why is he hanging his leg there?’

“So when I saw John Beaton run up and give him the card I thought, ‘Oh, he had dived, did he?’

“But then they showed it the second time, I still didn’t notice the touch on the ball, I must admit.

“But even when I see the touch on the ball. I understand, and I think this is where everybody’s getting a wee bit OTT, when he gets a touch on the ball, the ball stays in play.

“So then there’s the second touch when it hits him in the knee, whether he was going down or not, it doesn’t matter, he was still going down.

“Alistair Johnston‘s hung his leg there, it’s a penalty kick. So I have no argument with that.

“At the end of the day, I look back and I say to myself, if it was Celtic, would I want the penalty? 100% I would have.”

I think it’s fair to say that this is an opinion that many, many Celtic fans will simply not agree with but you do have to commend Grant for his honesty.

A lot of the time, and I include myself in this, Celtic fans can look at decisions that go against our team so to be so open and say that Beaton was correct to change his mind is bold.

However, I can’t agree with him. I still feel even at this time that Silva went down too easily and even Grant’s analysis of the Ibrox crowd showed what they thought of their players’ antics.

I’m sure there will be many other points of view shared about the penalty award but Grant’s is one I just cannot get onboard with.
