Nadal sends heartfelt message to Alcaraz after tennis final tears
Two tie breaks were needed for Serbian Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic to clinch gold in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Sunday. He defeated young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 at Roland Garros with some incredible play on show for the massive crowd in the arena, and millions watching around the world.
Nadal supports defeated Alcaraz
Despite this not being a Grand Slam event – and therefore not bringing the same financial rewards – representing your country carries with it massive emotion and both players showed this when the match completed. Alcaraz even broke down in tears as reality hit and the adrenaline began to wear off. And his compatriot, and doubles partner earlier in the tournament, Rafa Nadal, was quick to send him some words of support.
‘Carlos, although I know today is a difficult day, appreciate a medal that is very important for the entire country and you will see, over time, that it is important for you as well,’ read Nadal’s post on X. ‘Thank you for this incredible week and for the medal you have given to Spanish Sports. Hugs.’
