Messi and Argentina set to win 2024 Copa América according to ‘supercomputer’
There is less than a week to go before reigning Copa America champions Argentina face Canada in the 2024 tournament opener in Atlanta with 32 games to be played in deciding who gets to lift the famous trophy in the Miami final on 14 July.
An Angel Di Maria goal secured the 15th Copa triumph for the ‘Albicelsete’ in 2021 final against Brazil with the previous edition of the tournament delayed for a year as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic with games being played in empty stadiums across host nation Brazil in an attempt to contain the virus.
And according to the Oddspedia ‘supercomputer’, Lionel Scaloni’s men are clear favourites to retain their crown when the curtain comes down on the tournament which is being held in the United States with the comPetition serving as a precursor to the expanded 48 team 2026 World Cup which will be also held in the States with Canada and Mexico also helping out on hosting duties.
Who can stop the Albiceleste?
The World Cup champions are pitted in a highly comPetitive group with Chile, Peru and Canada Austria, Poland and the Netherlands but can boast of a squad brimming with talent in every department, the likes of Romero, De Paul, Enzo, Lautaro, Nico Gonzales and a certain Leo Messi. Argentina are heavily tipped by the Oddspedia supercomputer to bag their 16th continental title with a massive 43.8% chance of being crowned champions.
Trailing well behind Scaloni’s side for the supercomputer with a 15.4% possibility of lifting the trophy are Brazil with the Seleçao now under new management with Dorival Junior and also boasting a team packed with attacking flair with the Real Madrid trio of Rodrygo, Vini Jr and Endrick looking to light up stadiums across the US although the new coach surprised many with the omission of Casemiro and Richarlison from his final Copa squad.
Completing the supercomputer podium are Mexico who are given a 10.4% chance of winning followed by Uruguay with Marcelo Bielsa’s men seen as the tournament ‘dark horses’ for many with Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT fifth favourite with a 4.7% chance of glory according to the computer’s data.
The Oddspedia data was extracted via a series of metrics including historical match data acquisition, tournament model set-up and a results simulation set-up.
The 2024 Copa America commences on 20 July and runs through to the Miami final on 14 July.
