The New York Jets made the surprising decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh this week following the team’s most recent loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

It proved to be the second-biggest NFL story of the week, right after that Seattle Seahawks cheerleader whose wild photos leaked out.

“This is one of the most talented teams that has ever been assembled by the New York Jets,” Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters Tuesday. “I want to give the team the most opportunity to win this season, [so] I feel like we had to go in a different direction.”

Due to the abrupt nature of the firing, many began to wonder if a different reason was at play for all this.

Was the real reason for Saleh’s sudden firing? A possible answer seemed to emerge late Tuesday.

It will be interesting to see if this theory gains further steam from here.

That said, former Jets head coach Eric Mangini actually predicted that Saleh would likely be fired with a loss last week.

“Woody Johnson, the 66th Ambassador to the UK,” he said at the time.

“All of his buddies are going to be over there and after the game when he’s eating tea and crumpets, he’s going to be wanting to talk about his team and how successful they are. Not only that, you’ve got the former first-round draft pick playing against you and playing really well, and you’ve got a 40-year-old quarterback.”

While people scoffed at Mangini’s logic last week, he ended up being right.

Saleh was in fact fired after the Vikings loss. Will the real, confirmed reason for the move ever be revealed? Time will tell.
