In Scotland’s biggest Game for a long while, Anthony Ralston was the unfortunate man to have made a costly error.

The Celtic full-back’s careless first-half pass was pounced upon by the ruthless Xerdan Shaqiri. The veteran winger latched onto the loose ball and hit it, first time, into the top left corner.

From this point on, it would have been easy for Ralston to fold and let the ground eat him up, but he remained resilient.

The 25-year-old went on to stand out in the second half, putting in several crunching tackles and providing an out ball for his side on the right.

Scotland skipper Andy Robertson recognised his commendable recovery, which Gordon Strachan has also recently lauded.

“He had to recover quickly after that mistake, but he knew that deep inside he had something that could get him through it”, he said (The Scottish Sun).

“He has handled a lot of character-building moments in his career, and he dealt with another one admirably to play his part in Scotland’s best performance for a year.”

It is a testament to Ralston’s character that he is even playing for his country at a major tournament given his Celtic career looked over this time three years ago.

The defender has handled setback after setback throughout his career and will look to continually recover from his most recent one this Sunday against Hungary.
