Kasper Schmeichel’s perfect start at Celtic has taken many by surprise, including former Manchester United defender Paul Parker.

Schmeichel, a Leicester City title-winner and son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, has been in stellar form since joining Celtic, having not conceded a single goal in his first five league Games and has yet to taste defeat in the Cup and in the Champions League.

He’s done brilliantly so far to replace the void left by Joe Hart when he hung up his boots in the summer.

Celtic were in desperate need for a goalie, and Brendan gave his former number 1 a call after the Euros and secured a reunion at Celtic Park.

Paul Parker expressed his astonishment at Schmeichel’s seamless transition to Parkhead.

“I’m honestly quite shocked at how well things have gone for him at Celtic“, he told SpilXperten.

“He was as good as finished. I expected him to either retire or maybe return to England and play at a lower level. It’s a pretty surprising turn of events, in my opinion. We all heard the rumours about Premier League clubs being interested in him, but I’ve always said that he can be a disruptive presence in the dressing room if he’s stuck on the bench. That’s why I had a hard time imagining that happening.

“The level of comPetition in Scotland isn’t that high, we have to admit, and it’s a good place for an older goalkeeper to go. There isn’t a lot of work to do when you’re Celtic’s goalkeeper, but that doesn’t make his performances any less impressive.”

The difference the Dane has made to the team is clear for all to see. He may not have been called into action many times since stepping between the sticks, but his distribution has been top-class.

You can see the team are a lot more comfortable passing the ball back to goal, knowing that Schmeichel is more than able to deal with it and build an attack.

He’ll get tested more as the season goes on, and Celtic fans will be keen to see how he copes.
