As Celtic fans patiently await the Hoops’ return to comPetitive action for the new season, their attention has turned to the European Championships in Germany.

The tournament has in no way been a classic, and it has thrown up some rather questionable refereeing decisions so far.

Stuart Armstrong was denied a blatant penalty in Scotland’s final group Game against Hungary, while England were given a spot-kick that should never have been in their semi-final clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

The Hoops were in action at the same time as Gareth Southgate’s team, but with most supporters begrudging to pay for Celtic TV, they tuned in to see who would earn the right to play Spain in Sunday’s final.

England went through but with the aid of a shocking penalty decision. Former Celtic hero Pierre van Hooijdonk spoke the minds of most Football fans worldwide after the Game.

The Dutchman was scathing in his criticism of the referee Felix Zwayer and his team of officials, and rightly so.

“They (England) can thank Felix Zwayer”, he said (NOS via RecordSport).

“He really needs to be blacklisted. Terrible. Also in the second half. A duel with Cody Gakpo where he simply blew his whistle again, ten metres from the linesman. Those are moments that were crucial in this match.”

Most Celtic fans will be hoping Spain can get over the line on Sunday and mirror the scenes when Italy triumphed at Wembley three years ago.
