On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys will head to SoFi Stadium, just a short trek away from their training camp ground in Oxnard, to take on the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason opener. The two teams will also meet for a joint practice in Oxnard on Thursday, which will be much more telling about the game itself than anything we know now.

Dallas Cowboys first unofficial depth chart 2024

Even still, with the first preseason Game coming up, the Cowboys have released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2024 season.

This is obviously not official so there’s no need to overreact here, but let’s just calmly look at a few head-scratchers.

1. Chuma Edoga, not Tyler Guyton, is listed as the starting left tackle. Guyton has been the one showing out during training camp so far and Edoga hasn’t really done much of anything. Then again, Guyton has been out sick the last few days.

2. Josh Ball is listed ahead of Cooper Beebe at right guard. Obviously Zack Martin is listed as the starter (we’d have a lot more questions if he wasn’t), but Ball being his first backup is also questionable. Ball has been on the team since 2022, but injuries have plagued his entire career. He was out the entire season last year with a hip injury and has only just fully recovered within the last week or so. His chances of actually making it on the final roster aren’t even all that great. Beebe, on the other hand, has a pretty damn good chance of making it as he’s slated to play under center. And yet, Beebe is a rookie. He has done well in training camp, but perhaps he still has some proving to do before he earns a higher spot on the depth chart.

3. Marist Liufau is listed ahead of DeMarvion Overshown at linebacker. Overshown was last year’s third-round draft pick and has been doing well in training camp so far. Liufau, however, is a rookie. So far the trend has been to put veterans ahead of rookies, even if they’re playing well, but here we see the opposite. Liufau is, in fact, the only rookie on the first team of the depth chart. The rookie has indeed been turning heads in training camp and Overshown is just coming off an ACL injury, so that could explain it.

Again, none of this is official. We have the preseason game coming up this weekend and the rest of training camp still to get through. Much can change in that time.
