For as many questions as the Dallas Cowboys have on the offensive and defensive depth charts, there is one position room they seem to have on lock, and that is the defensive backs. Trevon Diggs will be back this season after being forced to sit out the majority of last year with an injury, which is a huge relief for the Cowboys. Diggs was one of the best cornerbacks in the league before his injury.

Without Diggs on the lineup, DaRon Bland stepped up big time, setting an NFL record for interceptions returned for a touchdown in one season with five.

It’s not yet official on the Cowboys’ defensive depth chart, but it seems likely that Markquese Bell will be moving back to safety under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Under Dan Quinn last year, Bell was playing at linebacker. In the 2024 NFL Draft, Dallas took another cornerback in the fifth round, Caelen Carson.

The Cowboys now have 17 defensive backs on the roster. This is not including Stephen Gilmore, who is currently still a free agent. They have eight cornerbacks with Diggs, Bland, and Jourdan Lewis as the top three. After them, the players get much younger and less proven. Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker are likely to lead the safeties, but both will be facing comPetition during Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard. There’s also the matter of Jayron Kearse, who is currently still a free agent as well. If Bell does indeed return to play safety, he’ll provide plenty of comPetition for Hooker.
