With the draw for the Copa América 2024 right around the corner (Thursday 7 December 2023), we take a look at the potential opponents for the USMNT, who will be looking to make their mark against their cross-continental opponents in a showpiece tournament before the 2026 World Cup.

The Copa América 2024 will be held in 14 stadiums across the USA, something which gives Christian Pulisic and co. a huge advantage when it comes to progressing against some of the world’s most talented squads. The tournament will begin on June 20 at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia before coming to a close at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 14.

Where will the Copa América draw be held?

The draw for the Copa América 2024 will be held on Thursday 7 December at James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. Ten CONMEBOL nations - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela - will all be involved, as well as six guests nations, the four semi-finalists for the CONCACAF Nations League: Panama, United States, Jamaica and Mexico.

Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Honduras will all comPete for one of the remaining places in playoff matches held in March 2024.

Who could the USMNT face in their Copa América group?

Gregg Berhalter’s side are guaranteed a place at the top of Group C, with the four Pot 1 teams having already been allocated their groups: Argentina (Group A), Mexico (Group B), United States (Group C), Brazil (Group D).

The remaining teams have been separated into pots, ranging from 2 to 4, with one team being selected from each pot to join the group. The pot draw means that the USMNT will therefore avoid group-stage clashes with Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, the other teams in Pot 1.

Copa América draw pots:

Pot 1

Argentina, Mexico, United States, Brazil

Pot 2

Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru

Pot 3

Chile, Panama, Venezuela, Paraguay

Pot 4

Jamaica, Bolivia, CONCACAF playoff winner (x2)

The style of the draw means that the USMNT will face one team from Pot 2, one team from Pot 3 and one team from Pot 4: that’s exactly what we’ll see happen at the draw on December 7.
