Although Arne Engels is joining from Augsburg, With Tomoki Iwata set to sign for Birmingham City, bringing in another central midfielder on top of the Belgian would be wise.

And according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph on X, two names have emerged in the Bhoys’ hunt.

Luke McCowan is one. The champions have been linked with the 26-year-old throughout the summer and could make a late permanent move for the Dundee standout.

The other player to be linked is Andy Irving. Celtic are exploring a loan deal for the 24-year-old, but West Ham United aren’t keen to let him go.

Irving came through at Hearts before moving to Turkgucu Munchen on a free transfer in 2021.

He then signed for Austrian top-tier outfit SK Austria Klagenfurt a year later, where he impressed as much that West Ham bought him for roughly £1.5m last summer (Transfermarkt).

Irving stayed on loan at Klagenfurt last season, though, and majorly impressed, scoring 10 goals and assisting four in 30 appearances.

He, along with McCowan, would be an intriguing acquisition that would bolster the Bhoys’ homegrown ranks.
