Brendan Rodgers Brilliant Reaction Aberdeen Sink Rangers
Brendan Rodgers has acknowledged Aberdeen’s impressive start to the season following their 2-1 win over Rangers at Pittodrie on Wednesday night, a result that sees the Dons level on points with Celtic. Despite giving Aberdeen a nod for their result against the Ibrox side, Rodgers was clear that his primary focus remains on Celtic, especially with an upcoming League Cup semi-final clash against Aberdeen at Hampden.
In his remarks after Celtic’s 2-0 home win over Dundee, where Alistair Johnston and Arne Engels secured the points with two second-half goals, Rodgers addressed the recent surge in comPetition at the top of the league. “Listen, Aberdeen have had a fantastic start. That’s a really good result for them,” he told Record Sport, recognising Jimmy Thelin’s squad, who now sit only behind Celtic on goal difference, both clubs nine points ahead of Rangers.
However, Rodgers quickly shifted his focus back to his own side’s campaign. “But as I’m sure you can respect, my focus is very much on Celtic. Our guys have made a brilliant start also, in terms of how they’ve been playing, the goals they’ve been scoring, secure defensively in the main and in a really good position in the Champions League,” he added.
The Celtic boss also noted that he prefers to assess progress after 10 league Games, but given the squad’s early-season form, he sees it in a “really good place” going into Hampden.
Saturday’s semi-final promises to be a tense affair as Aberdeen look to build on their league momentum. Rodgers, though, relishes the big occasion. “Semi-finals are always great occasions. I love going to Hampden, and we’re in a really good place going there. We’ve got players coming back, and hopefully, it’ll be a really exciting Game,” he said, clearly optimistic about his squad’s readiness for the challenge.
With players returning from injury and confidence growing, Rodgers and his squad will look to maintain their form and take another step towards retaining the League Cup. It won’t be easy against this Aberdeen side brimming with confidence. This Game is for a place in the final of the League cup, but the subtext for what’s happening in the league will be running through the tie.
