Bill Belichick fuels rumors of potential head coach position for Cowboys next season
After losing their fifth straight Game to the Houston Texans on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys' record now stands at 3-7. And while head coach Mike McCarthy was already sitting on the hot seat to begin the season, his questionable play calls on Sunday (there were several) surely sealed his fate if his current record and/or lack of postseason success had not yet done so.
As McCarthy is currently in the final year of his contract, no one is expecting him to return to coach the Cowboys in 2025. And among the many names swirling around the rumor pool for who could replace him, Bill Belichick’s has remained at the forefront.
Belichick already ready to coach Cowboys
Belichick himself added fuel to the fire with a comment he made on ESPN2’s Manningcast during the Cowboys' Monday Night Football game against the Texans.
As the Cowboys allowed running back Joe Mixon to go completely untouched for 45 yards to get the Texans' first touchdown of the Game, Belichick said this:
“Go tackle him! You wear pads for a reason. Go tackle him.”
Excellent coaching advice...something the Cowboys could use. While many believe that Belichick will be among the first people Jerry Jones calls once he inevitably gives McCarthy the axe, I’m not sure how Belichick would feel about relinquishing control to Jerry. And I’m quite sure Jerry would not be giving up control to Belichick.
Time will tell, but with seven Cowboys games still left to play, there will be plenty more fodder for the rumor mill this season.
