Borussia Dortmund to play PSG in Champions League semi-final

And Dortmund aren't the only ones to have turned it around in the quarter-finals! PSG trailed from the first leg against Barcelona but have come back to beat the Catalans in hugely emphatic fashion in Spain. 

The Germans will face the French for a place in the Champions League final. 

Dortmund's first UCL semi since 2013

Dortmund last reached the last-four stage in 2013, when they were beaten by Bayern Munich in the final at Wembley.

Atleti don't seem to be very interested in defending, pushing players forward as you'd expect. Yet they're offering no attacking threat. 

Dortmund keeping the ball in the corner, which is the most infuriating thing ever if you're the opposing team.

Veteran attacker Marco Reus comes on for Brandt. 

Saúl is penalised for an apparent high boot with Atleti on the attack. Looked harsh to me. 

Correa made such a difference after coming on for Atleti but he's hardly had a kick since Dortmund's third goal.

Sabitzer has never been far away from the action! He fires in a shot from range which Oblak has to touch over!

Oblak again has to intervene to stop Sancho from getting onto a ball into the box. 

The momentum is all with Dortmund at the moment.

HUGE save from Oblak!

That was far too easy for Dortmund! One ball over the top takes out the whole Atlético defence but Füllkrug can't beat Oblak in a one-on-one. Could that prove crucial?

Atleti have regained their composure a bit. But they're not causing the same threat as they were. 

Atleti need to imagine they are starting the second half again. But Dortmund have got the wind in their sails, egged on by the home crowd. 

Dortmund have got a second wind out of nowhere here. They looked down and out. 

You won't be surprised to hear Signal Iduna Park is absolutely jumping. 

Again, Oblak is going to be really disappointed with that, I reckon.

A ball into the box falls to Sabitzer, who hits it across goal with his left. Oblak gets a big hand on it but can't keep it out! 

What a game this is!

There's nothing too fancy about that, but it's a brilliant header from Füllkrug to flick the ball across goal and in off the post! All square in the tie (again)!

What do Atlético do from here? This attacking approach has worked brilliantly for them since half-time. Do they risk changing it? 

Brandt fires in a free-kick which almost catches Oblak out! Beaten away by the Atleti keeper.

And the sub almost has an immediate impact! Bynoe-Gittens gets his head on a cross at the back post but can't keep it down. 

Dortmund substitution

Bynoe-Gittens replaces Adeyemi for Dortmund. 

What a turnaround (again)!

Dortmund 2-2 Atlético (3-4 on aggregate)

It's all about Correa. He skips away from Schlotterbeck and fires in a cross which falls to Riquelme. His effort is saved, Correa's follow-up is blocked but it drops to him again he fires high past Kobel!

Riquelme hoists a cross up to the back post for Correa, who tries to nod down to the unmarked Griezmann but misses the target. 

Ooooh, De Paul's eyes lit up there as the ball dropped to him out of the sky. Sancho just gets a toe on it to take it away from the Atleti man. 

De Paul was a bit lucky there. Sabitzer nicks the ball off him and Dortmund look like they could be in, but the ref decides the Atleti midfielder was fouled, which I'm not sure he was. 

Atleti have been so much better in the second half. So much better.  

Correa misses huge chance!

A MASSIVE chance for Correa! He's played clean through on goal by Koke but, like Morata early on, shoots inches past the post!

Oblak's crucial interception!

Sabitzer gets in behind the Atleti defence and Oblak has to race from his line to rescue the situation!

Brandt lines up one from the edge of the box as Dortmund try to get back in front but Koke gets in the way. 

This is perfectly set up for the next 35-40 minutes (and maybe more). Perfectly!

That's poor from De Paul! He's got Llorente totally free in the middle but floats the ball over the bar from the right. Big chance. 

Riquelme is next to take his man on. He beats one but falls at the last hurdle before he can break through on goal. 

That all came from another break forward from Correa, who's made an immediate difference. Schlotterbeck made a crucial interception, but the resulting corner led to the goal.

Hermoso is all alone to head a corner goalwards and Hummels sticks a foot out to divert it past Kobel!

Correa has already made a difference...he gets away from Maatsen and fires low across goal, forcing Kobel to intervene.

Maatsen goal turns tie in Dortmund's favour

I'm assuming this isn't a brag about Dortmund being caught offside on fewer occasions that Atleti.

Ian Maatsen took full advantage of space on the left to fire low past Oblak for 2-0. The goalkeeper definitely should've saved the first one and opted to go for the second with his feet, which was maybe not the best decision either.  

Half-time thoughts: Dortmund 2-0 Atlético (3-2 on aggregate)

Two goals in six minutes did the damage in a first half that Dortmund largely controlled.

Thetwo teams traded clear-cut chances in the opening minutes, with Sabitzer taking too long to get a shot away at one end before Morata missed a one-on-one at the other.

That’s as good as it got for Atleti, who were on the back foot thereafter. Oblak had a few fairly comfortable saves to make but let Brandt’s effort from a tight angle slip through his grasp for the opening goal.

Moments later, Maatsen blasted a low strike past the goalkeeper to turn the tie around, which the Germans have merited so far.

All the danger is coming down the Dortmund left/Atleti right, and the hosts have taken full advantage.

Atlético's miserly defence crumbling

Atleti have long been known for their miserly defence, but that hasn't been the case recently, and certainly not this season. As good old Mister Chip points out, that's 11 Games in a row without a clean sheet, their worst record in almost 20 years.

The best thing about Atlético Madrid so far, bar one or two neat passing moves, has been their lovely away jersey (even though they could've worn red and white...).

Dortmund's fine home form in the Champions League looks set to continue! Quick-fire goals from Brandt and Maasten have turned the tie around. 

Brandt whips a lovely free-kick into the box and it causes havoc, which Giménez does just enough to avert!

Hemoso booked

Mario Hermoso is next to see yellow for holding off Adeyemi with his arm. He'll miss the first leg of the semi-final is Atleti get there. 

Two extra minutes incoming. 

Wow. Griezmann has the chance to deliver from the free-kick and sticks it behind for a goal-kick. Oops. 

Ryerson booked

Ryerson stops Azpilicueta in his tracks as he tries to run in behind (even with his lack of pace). Yellow.

What can Atlético Madrid do from here? This isn't going according to plan.

Azpilicueta charges into the box and ends up sliding in on Kobel. There's not much in it, but Dortmund want a second yellow for the Atleti defender. It's not coming through.

Guess where it came from? That left-hand side...

Sabitzer gets into that space and feeds it into the onrushing Maatsen, who lashes low into the bottom corner!

Can shot saved

Can has got a long-range special in his locker, but that's an easy one for Oblak. 

Morata is going to have to be careful here. Schlotterbeck has been winding him up the last few minutes and he's just charged into the back of the defender. Hook, line and sinker. 

All the danger from Dortmund is coming down their left-hand side. They've exploited space between Molina and Witsel more than once. 

Brandt levels the tie for Dortmund

It's a poor clearance from Molina, first of all. Hummels plays a lovely ball over the top for Brandt, whose shot somehow squirms past Oblak. Should've saved it, if you ask me. 

Hummels almost lets Griezmann in!

Hummels is playing a risky, risky game! He gets a pass from Kobel and plays it blind. How Griezmann doesn't pick it up in the box is a mystery!

Azpilicueta booked

Azpilicueta is first in the book for Atleti after sliding through the back of Adeyemi. 

Griezmann is finally getting into nice pockets of space. He feeds a pass into the box for Morata, who can't quite get away from Hummels to get a shot way. 

Ahhh, what a promising attack that was for the visitors! They have 4 vs 3 but Llorente is careless with his pass through towards Morata, which is intercepted. 

Sabitzer shoots over

Sancho is next to get in behind on the Dortmund left. His cutback is scrambled away to Sabitzer, whose effort from range whistles well over. 

63% possession for Dortmund in the opening 25 minutes (if that means anything...).

Atleti work their way nicely out from the back and up the field. Molina slings in a cross from the right but Hummels gets to it just before Morata. 

De Paul plays a nice ball in behind the Dortmund defence for Molina and it looks for a second as if he's going to have a chance to shoot...! But his touch takes him away from goal, and he's offside...

I mentioned Griezmann could be the Game's most decisive player. He's hardly had a kick so far.

It's been all Dortmund in the last 10 minutes. 

Oblak to the rescue!

Atleti almost make a total mess of defending that Dortmund attack! Brandt tries to slide in Adeyemi but Molina has him covered. The defender plays the ball back to Oblak, who is on his way out and does just enough to clear before it goes past him. 

Füllkrug looks as if he's struggling a bit here. One to keep an eye on.

Another effort from the hosts! Adeyemigets on the end of a cross from the right and forces Oblak into action once again. It's fairly comfortable for the Slovenian goalkeeper. 

Dortmund starting to exert a teeny, tiny bit of pressure. 

From the corner, Brandt fires one in from a tight angle, which Oblak beats away!

Oblak was lucky there! He flaps at Brandt's corner and Füllkrug gets his head on it, only to direct it against an opponent and wide!

Danger for Atleti! Brandt finds space on the left-side of the box and looks to pull the ball back for Füllkrug...a crucial interception stops Dortmund in their tracks!

Sancho gets in behind the Atleti defence for the first time...ah, that's probably why. Offside. 

It's been a really lively opening. Both teams are likely to win the ball back as quickly as they can after losing it. 

Maatsen plays a long ball over the top trying to get Sabitzer in behind, but Witsel is there to mop up. No way through there. 

Some really nice possession play from the visitors, who have settled into the game fairly well. 

A little bit of calmness after that frenetic start...

I've just seen that Sabitzer chance again...Adeyemi races down the left and played a perfect ball into the middle...why didn't he hit it first time?!

Kobel saves from De Paul!

What an open start! Llorente pulls the ball back for De Paul, who fizzes one into the arms of Kobel.

Morata squanders big chance!

What a start! Seconds later, Morata races clean through on goal, dinks the ball over Kobel...and wide! Another massive chance!

HUGE chance for Sabitzer!

Dortmund should be ahead! Sabitzer is all alone in the box and can pass the ball into the net first time, but opts to take an unnecessary touch and his effort is blocked!

It's taken two minutes for Simeone to be unhappy about an opposition player not getting booked for a foul. Who had two minutes? 

Dortmund have had pretty much all of the ball so far, Atleti are just now getting their first feel for it. 

As Simeone anticipated, it looks as if Dortmund are going to try to get Atleti on the back foot right away. Right in their faces.

Atlético Madrid have had plenty of Champions League heartbreak in recent years, mainly at the hands of Real Madrid. Simeone’s boys lost in finals to their city rivals in 2014 (after conceding a last-minute equaliser) and 2016 (on penalties) and were also eliminated by them in 2015 (quarter-finals) and 2017 (semi-finals).

The good news is they can’t meet them until the final this season (although they have beaten them twice already)…

When the 1974 European Cup final is factored in, Atleti have lost three showpiece games out of three. Maybe they're due one...

Borussia Dortmund's Champions League record

Is there a case to be made for Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid being the two best teams of the 2010s who didn’t win the Champions League? That was my hunch, although a little bit of research tells me the Germans weren’t quite as successful as I’d remembered.

Jürgen Klopp's BVB were beaten in the final by Bayern Munich in 2013 and reached the quarter-finals on just a couple of occasions, which they have since equalled this decade.

Of course, they won the competition in just their fifth appearance in 1996/97, upsetting favourites Juventus in the final in Munich.

Simeone’s side topped Group E with 14 points. They won four and drew two, conceding just six goals while scoring 17. 

Lazio, Feyenoord and Celtic had the potential to be something of a slippery eel but Atleti waltzed through with no problems at all and it never looked like getting to the knockout rounds was going to be a problem for them. 

An away draw to Celtic was a low point but they smashed them 6-0 shortly after to get revenge and apart from that, the side cruised through using their immense home record to help them along.

BVB did the almost unthinkable and topped the Group of Death.

PSG, Newcastle and AC Milan were drawn alongside Terzic’s side in a group that instantly captivated football fans around the globe and earned itself the deadly label on the spot. 

Three wins, two draws and a loss was enough to see them beat PSG to top spot and avoid a potentially catastrophic draw in the Round of 16.

Round 5 in the group saw PSG draw with Newcastle while Dortmund defeated Milan 1-3, practically sealing their passage and calming the nerves after a shaky start that saw them defeated by the French side.

Atlético back in form for business time

After a hopeless run of form (two wins in nine games) in February and the start of March, Atlético have bounced back with four wins in the last five.

Would you believe me if I told you Atlético Madrid had never finished outside of the top three in LaLiga since the start of Diego Simeone’s first full season in charge (2011-12)? You should, because it’s true!

Could we be about to see history made for all the wrong reasons? Maybe not, as Los Colochoneros recorded a potentially crucial home win on Saturday over Girona, who are currently third, four points ahead of them.

Fourth will be good enough to qualify for the Champions League, with Atleti holding a four-point advantage over fifth-placed Athletic Club, whose (probably literal) Copa del Rey final hangover might give Simeone’s side a bit of respite.

Dortmund’s unusually average home form

It’s been win or bust for Dortmund recently, with six wins and three defeats in their last nine outings. They’re usually pretty formidable at home and will hope to be so again today, although their recent record of four wins in 10 matches at Signal Iduna Park won’t exactly have Atleti quaking in their boots.

In case you missed it, the Champions League will have a new format next season, which is all explained here.

Four extra teams will take part in the group stage, including two from the best performing countries in European competitions in 2023/24, which looks likely to be Italy, and either Germany or England.

Dortmund will be desperately hoping it's the former, but it could depend on how well they do today, and in the next few weeks.

Bayer Leverkusen have obviously been the big story in Germany this season and will be back in the Champions League in 2024/25. But will they be joined by Dortmund?

BVB are currently in fifth place in the Bundesliga, although they are level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who they could overtake. Of course, we still don’t know whether Germany’s top four or top five will qualify for next’s season’s extended UCL.

The draw which took place after the round of 16 was not only for the quarter-finals but also decided the bracket for the semi-finals, which looks like this:

This week’s Champions League quarter-final second legs

Borussia Dortmund - Atlético Madrid is one of four mouth-watering (I'm sure you'll agree) Champions League quarter-final ties that will come to a close this midweek. Here’s what’s on the menu today and tomorrow:

- Tuesday 16 April: Dortmund - Atlético (1-2)

- Tuesday 16 April: Barcelona - PSG (3-2)

- Wednesday 17 April: Bayern Munich - Arsenal (2-2)

- Wednesday 17 April: Manchester City - Real Madrid (2-2)

Team news: Atlético Madrid

Atlético are also without one of the players who found the net last week, with wing-back Samuel Lino suspended. Attacker Memphis Depay misses out because of a muscle problem, while the game comes too soon for long-term injury victim Thomas Lemar.

Team news: Borussia Dortmund

Last week’s goalscorer Sébastien Haller is out after suffering an ankle injury early on in the weekend win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Defender Ramy Bensebaïni is the other confirmed absentee because of ankle ligament damage.

Winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who made an impact off the bench in Madrid, was also substituted in Dortmund’s last game and is a doubt due to a back problem.

Atlético hold narrow lead over Dortmund after first leg

Missed the first leg? Fear not, here’s a little recap!

After nine days off because of the Copa del Rey final being played in Spain, Atleti flew out of the traps and strangled Dortmund into submission in the first half. An early goal from Rodrigo De Paul was added to by Samuel Lino, although Diego Simeone’s side may well have been disappointed to only be 2-0 ahead at half-time.

That came back to bite them in the second half, which followed a totally different pattern. Dortmund began to control possession and pushed their opponents back, although Atleti initially held strong and could’ve added a third through Lino on the counter. Eventually, BVB’s pressure told, however, and Sébastien Haller pulled a goal back with under 10 minutes to go. Julian Brandt almost provided a dramatic ending, but saw his injury-time header crash off the bar.
