Former Rangers player Terry Butcher has voiced his apprehension about Celtic’s dominance in Scottish Football, particularly as they edge closer to surpassing Rangers in terms of total trophies won. The former Ibrox stalwart’s unease reflects a broader concern within the Rangers camp about Celtic’s relentless trophy pursuit.

For years, Rangers have branded themselves as the “most successful club in the world,” a slogan that has raised eyebrows given its dubious basis. In reality, Egyptian side Al Ahly boast more impressive trophy haul globally. Despite the bold claim, it appears to be more of a marketing gimmick than a fact-based statement. This narrative is now under significant threat as Celtic, with their utter dominance, are on the verge of overtaking Rangers’ combined pre-2012 and post-2012 trophy count.

In a candid interview with Football Scotland, Butcher admitted he was unaware of just how close Celtic were to this milestone. When the situation was highlighted, he seemed genuinely taken aback and issued a rallying cry to those at Ibrox.

“No, I never thought or even considered that. It’s pretty sobering from a Rangers perspective to hear that.“ Butcher remarked.

The Englishman stressed the importance of a collective effort and a no-passengers mentality within the Rangers squad this season.

“That philosophy would still have an impact at a club like Rangers in terms of: ‘This is it, this is the season’. If Rangers are to forge ahead, there’s got to be a real shift from their point of view. I’m sure (Philippe) Clement will lay it on the line and say: ‘These are the ones, this is what we’ve got to do and let’s go and do it and make sure we’re all in this together’.”

Butcher further emphasised that complacency cannot be afforded, warning that if Rangers continue to perform at their current level, Celtic will likely pull ahead. He issued a stark warning to his former club, urging them to rise to the challenge.

“They’ve got to stick to the script and the script has got to be a really tough one for them to make sure that they can comPete even better than what they’ve done before because if they comPete at the same level, then Celtic are going to go ahead.

“That would be a real concern for me as a Rangers player, you can’t allow that to happen and I’m sure the Rangers fans will be saying: ‘That must not happen at any cost.'”

While Celtic are unlikely to adopt Rangers’ controversial global claim, surpassing their domestic rivals would firmly establish them as the most successful club in Scottish Football. This title would not be a boast, but a simple fact backed by their achievements on the pitch.

Celtic continue to be the benchmark in Scottish Football and it’s a tough pill to swallow for the older fans and former players.
