Alex Morgan goes up against Linda Caicedo in a battle of two generations
The quarter-final match of the W Gold Cup, which will see the United States go up against Colombia at BMO Stadium, brings us a generational change in the two great players on each team. On one side, there is the legend Alex Morgan, one of the best players in history and the fifth-top scorer for the United States with 123 goals.

On the other side, there is the young forward who is only 19-years-old, but already destined to become one of the great names of the Game. Linda Caicedo, who in 2022 was recognised as the second best player in the world by the Globe Soccer Awards, currently plays for Real Madrid and represents a new generation of top talent in women’s Football.
At just 14 years of age, Linda was already one of the great promises of Colombian football, driven precisely by Morgan, who is her hero along with Catalina Usme, another star in the Colombia lineup.
“In the men’s Game, Messi is an excellent player and in the women’s it’s Alex Morgan and Catalina Usme” she said in 2019 in an interview with the Sports network ESPN, when she was taking her first steps towards stardom in Colombian soccer.

Morgan a late addition to USWNT squad
Alex Morgan had not been called up by Twila Kilgore in her roster for the W Gold Cup, looking to take a step towards a generational change for the future of the U.S. Women’s National Team. However, Mia Fishel’s injury gave a new opportunity to the San Diego Wave striker, who will now face Linda Caicedo for the second time, the first time in an official competition.
Morgan and Caicedo started the first of two friendly matches in October. Morgan missed a penalty kick in a tight game in which neither star shone.
In addition, the controversy was not long in coming at the last Ballon d’Or gala, in which Linda was not included in the ideal 11 of the season, while Alex Morgan took the place that many believe belonged to the Real Madrid player.
Alex Morgan and Linda Caicedo is a duel of two different generations in which the experience of the North American could see her victorious, but Colombia also dream of continuing to make history in the first W Gold Cup in the history of women’s soccer.
