4t.Instructions on how to make delicious Oreo Truffles!
Oreo Truffles are the easy-peasy holiday (or anytime . . .) candy you did not know you were missing. Oreo cookies (or your fave chocolate sandwich cookie) are ground up with softened cream cheese in a food processor. A little salt is added for good measure and to make sure the chocolate flavor pops, as well as the cream cheese’s quintessential tang (which is just the perfect foil to the sweet cookies and chocolate coating).
If you want to avoid using a food processor (because who wants to pull out a heavy piece of equipment when assembling an easy treat?), or if you don’t have one, you may place the Oreos in a zippered plastic bag and use a rolling pin to smash them up. Draping a dish towel over the bag prevents cookie crumbs from flying around your kitchen. Then you can just combine the crumbs with the cream cheese in a mixing bowl.
Once assembled and served, these truffles will knock your socks off (and those of your friends and family) not only because they are so darn tasty and poppable (ie: once you taste one, you’ll be popping them into your mouth with abandon), but also because they take only about a half an hour to assemble and are ready to serve as soon as their chocolate coating is set. Moreover they are just the prettiest little candies one ever did see. And festive when sprinkled with red, green and white nonpareils. Larger holiday-colored sprinkles will work too, but there is something so special about the delicate, round nonpareils that marries so beautifully with the round truffles.
TECHNIQUE TIPS: Rewarm the chocolate in the microwave if it starts to cool and harden as you dip your truffles.
Be sure to sprinkle the crushed candy cane on top of the truffles as soon as they are dipped in chocolate. Once the chocolate sets, the candy will no longer stick.
If excess chocolate pools at the bottom of the truffles, you can chill them briefly and trim away any excess with a paring knife.
Ingredients
- 8ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1teaspoon kosher salt
- 1(14-ounce) package chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos
- 3cups (510 grams) white chocolate chips
- 3tablespoons vegetable oil
- red, green and white nonpareils, for decorating
Preparation
1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade, combine the cream cheese, salt and Oreos until smooth.
3. Scoop the mixture using a one tablespoon cookies scoop and roll into balls with your hands. Place the balls on the prepared sheet and freeze for 15 minutes.
4. In a medium, microwave-safe bowl, add the chocolate and oil and microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring frequently until the chocolate melts, about 2 minutes.
5. Drop each truffle into the melted chocolate, one at a time, lifting each one out with a fork and allowing the excess chocolate to drip off. Place the dipped truffles back on the prepared sheet and immediately sprinkle each one with a few festive sprinkles.
6. Serve the truffles at room temperature.
