Who will be the starting QB for the Vikings after J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending injury?
The Minnesota Vikings announced today that rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy will miss the entire 2024 NFL season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee, which requires surgery. The injury was first reported yesterday, and though there was initial hope that McCarthy might recover within four to eight weeks, further medical evaluation determined that his rehabilitation will likely extend to four to six months, effectively sidelining him for the season.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed disappointment over the news but remained optimistic about McCarthy’s future, stressing that the organization has viewed him as the franchise quarterback for years.
McCarthy’s performance in the Vikings’ preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders generated excitement among the organization and the fans. After an initial interception, the former Michigan star rebounded, completing 10 of 14 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to deliver the ball with velocity, particularly over the middle of the field, was a standout feature of his Game.
However, the injury now means McCarthy’s focus will shift from on-field development to rehabilitation. Despite the setback, McCarthy is expected to engage with the team’s playbook and preparation fully. O’Connell states that this challenge will be one more for the young quarterback to overcome.
Who will substitute JJ at the Vikings?
The Vikings will rely on veteran quarterback Sam Darnold to lead the offense with McCarthy out. Darnold, signed in the offseason, will now take on the starting role for the 2024 season. The Vikings are also confident in backup quarterbacks Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall and are unlikely to pursue additional help on the free-agent market unless Darnold suffers an injury.
The Vikings’ opening schedule is challenging, with early matchups against teams like the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Green Bay Packers. Darnold will be under pressure to perform, especially with a roster filled with talented weapons such as Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Although the loss of McCarthy is a substantial blow, the Vikings are hopeful that this season will serve as a stepping stone for the young quarterback’s eventual return. Coach O’Connell noted, “This is just a minor setback, setting up what we believe will be a major comeback for JJ McCarthy.”
