Who are the Yankees fans who grabbed Mookie Betts and are banned from attending Game 5?
The New York Yankees have banned two fans from attending today’s World Series clash with the Los Angeles Dodgers, after they were ejected for interference during the Yankees’ Game 4 win yesterday.
Who are the fans banned by the Yankees?
The fans have been identified by ESPN as Austin Capobianco, a Yankees season-ticket holder, and John Peter. The Athletic has offered further details about Capobianco, revealing that he is a 38-year-old from Connecticut.
What happened in Game 4?
During the first inning at Yankee Stadium, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts attempted to catch a Gleyber Torres hit next to the wall separating the playing field from spectators, only for the two fans to grab Betts’s glove and yank the ball away. The umpires called Torres out due to fan interference, and Capobianco and Peter were ejected from the stadium.
What did the Yankees say about fans' interference?
In a statement released to media outlets today, the Yankees described Capobianco and Peter’s conduct as “egregious and unacceptable”, adding that the franchise and the league have a “zero-tolerance policy” against such interference.
“Last night two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts," the Yankees said.
“The safety and security of players, fans and Stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised.
“Tonight marks the final home game of year, and we want every ounce of our fans' passion on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, however the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line into intentionally putting players at physical risk.
“The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior displayed last night. These fans will not be permitted to attend tonight’s game in any capacity.”
Yankees still alive after Game 4 victory
The Yankees were 11-4 winners in Game 4, ensuring they avoided a 4-0 World Series whitewash. Having sidestepped elimination yesterday, Aaron Boone’s men face another must-win clash on home turf today.
Game 5 of the 2024 MLB World Series is scheduled to begin at 8:08 p.m. ET/5:08 p.m. PT. Viewers in the US will be able to watch the clash on FOX.
