When the curtain comes down on the Paris Olympics on Sunday August 11, the closing ceremony will reportedly include a Hollywood cameo as the baton is passed on to the next host of the Summer Games.

Where are the 2028 Olympics taking place?

The entertainment news outlet Variety has confirmed with Paris 2024 organisers that Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise will take part in the handover of the Olympic flag to Los Angeles, which is to stage the 34th edition of the modern Games in 2028.

Los Angeles 2028: dates, venues

Announced as the 2028 venue in September 2021, the Californian city will be staging the Olympics for the third time, having previously held the Games in 1932 and 1984. Overall, it will be the United States’ fifth time as the host nation.

Due to take place from July 14 to July 30, 2028, the Los Angeles Olympics have 22 confirmed venues, according to the event’s official website.

Most notably, the Memorial Coliseum, the home stadium of college football team the USC Trojans, will again be the setting for the Olympics’ track and field events. Having also fulfilled that role in 1932 and 1984, the 77,500-capacity arena will become the first stadium to host track and field at three separate Olympics.

Among other major venue choices for the 2028 Games, the NBA basketball stadiums Crypto.com Arena and Intuit Dome - the homes of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers, respectively - are to be used. Crypto.com Arena is due to hold gymnastics, with basketball played at Intuit Dome.

SoFi Stadium, which is normally used by the NFL teams the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, is to be modified into a 38,000-seat swimming arena. This will make it the largest swimming venue in Olympics history.

Oklahoma City, located some 1,300 miles away from LA, will also see action at the 2028 Games. Canoe slalom events are set to be held at the Whitewater Center, and softball matches will be played at Devon Park.

The Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium are expected to share hosting duties for both the opening and closing ceremonies.

Where will the 2032 Summer Games be held?

After LA 2028, the Summer Olympics will move from North America to Oceania, where Brisbane is to make its debut as host city in 2032. It will be Australia’s third experience of staging the Games: Melbourne was the venue in 1956, before Sydney hosted the Olympics in 2000.

Brisbane 2023: dates, venues

Confirmed as the host of the 35th Summer Olympics in July 2021, Brisbane will hold the Games from July 23 to August 8, 2032.

Organisers had originally intended to redevelop the iconic Gabba cricket stadium and make it the main arena for the Olympics. Earlier this year, however, the Queensland government revealed that it was scrapping these plans. Instead, Brisbane’s Queensland Sport and Athletics Center, which currently holds 48,500 spectators, is to be upgraded for use as the track and field arena.

The opening and closing ceremonies are now expected to be held at the 52,500-capacity Suncorp Stadium, a rugby venue that will also undergo redevelopment. Among other notable Brisbane 2032 venues, swimming events are set to take place at Brisbane Live, a 17,000-seat indoor arena that is yet to be built.

Melbourne and Sydney are also in line to witness some of the competition at the 2032 Olympics, with football matches due to be staged by both former main hosts.
