Quarterback Jared Goff will this weekend be tasked with leading the Detroit Lions into the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl. After beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional round, the Lions face the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s NFC Championship game - the first time the Michiganders have progressed this far in the NFL playoffs since 1991.

Goff, who is now in his eighth season in the league, will be seeking his second career appearance in the Super Bowl, having previously been to the showpiece game with his first NFL team, the Los Angeles Rams.

When was Goff drafted by the Rams?

Before being traded to the Lions in 2021, Goff spent five seasons with the Rams after being drafted by the Californians in 2016. Having excelled in a three-season stint in college football with Pac-12 team the California Golden Bears, the 29-year-old was selected as the No. 1 overall pick.

What was Goff’s record in college football?

According to Goff’s profile on the Golden Bears’ website, he set 26 school records between 2013 and 2015, during which time he started 37 out of 37 possible Games. His records included college career tallies in passing yards (12,220), passing yards per Game (329.7 ypg) and touchdown passes (96).

He also sits behind only Aaron Rodgers, who has gone on to become a four-time NFL MVP, in the Golden Bears’ all-time passing efficiency rankings.

In 2015, Goff established two new records in the Pac-12 conference, by racking up 4,719 passing yards and 43 TD passes. His final season in the college game - in which he inspired the Golden Bears to their first winning record in four years - saw him named in the Pac-12 All-Conference team. No California quarterback had achieved that feat since Rodgers in 2004.

Goff seeks chance to avenge Super Bowl LVIII loss

Ahead of this weekend’s NFC conference title decider with the 49ers - a team that Goff supported as a youngster - the QB is one step away from the chance to banish the memory of Super Bowl defeat five years ago.

In 2018 - one of three NFL seasons so far in which he has received Pro Bowl recognition - Goff helped the Rams to Super Bowl LVIII, against the New England Patriots in Atlanta. However, he struggled in a 13-3 defeat at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as LA became only the second team in Super Bowl History not to score a touchdown.
