When was the last time the Super Bowl went to overtime?

Super Bowl LVIII provided us with everything you hope for in a Super Bowl: Twists and turns, new records, the first overtime in years, and of course an incredibly dramatic finish.

Jake Moody & Harrison Butker gave NFL fans a little extra

On Sunday night, NFL fans were treated to an epic Super Bowl encounter between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. While there will be many talking points for analysts and fans alike, there are three that are worth mentioning. Firstly, there was 49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody who stepped up in the first half to set the NFL record for longest field goal in a Super Bowl. Moody was on target from a more than impressive 56 yards out. The three points put the Chiefs up 19-16 with 1:53 on the clock in the fourth quarter.

Then, with ice in his veins and time running out, the Chiefs’ Harrison Butker calmly nailed his second field goal of the big Game from 57 yards, to break the record set by Moody a minute earlier. It was something to see and with that, we headed to overtime. Speaking of overtime - trivia fans will love this - the extra period that fans got to enjoy marks just the second time in NFL History, that the Super Bowl has gone to overtime.

Tom Brady took us to overtime before

In the 56 Super Bowls prior to Sunday’s, just one has gone to overtime: The New England Patriots’ 34-28 comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons in 2017′s Super Bowl LI. On that day, the Falcons leading 28-3 in the third quarter and then the unthinkable happened. Tom Brady took over the Game, completing a record 43 of 62 passes for a staggering 466 passing yards. The Patriots behind Brady’s MVP performance would go on to score three touchdowns and a field goal on their final four drives of regulation to tie the score 28-28 and off they went to overtime. As we know, the Falcons ended up going the way of countless other teams that tangled with Brady.

This of course brings us back to Super Bowl LVIII and the way in which Jake Moody and Harrison Butker saw their epic battle completely derailed by two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes. So, on we go.

Overtime brought even more drama for fans as it became clear that neither team was going to back down. Queue the kicker. With 7:22 on the clock in OT, Moody was called on once again and the 49ers rookie delivered one more time to take the Niners to a 22-19 lead. Unfortunately, the Niners were given a reality check on the resulting drive in the form of Patrick Mahomes’ slick scramble up the middle for a 19-yard gain. The quarterback in much the same way as Brady back in 2017, took over the game. The play gave the Chiefs a 1st down at the 49ers’ 13-yard line and with that, you knew what was coming. Mahomes found Mecole Hardman Jr. wide open on the right side of the end zone for a Super Bowl-sealing touchdown. The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL 2023-24 Super Bowl Champions.
