What new WNBA record did Caitlin Clark set?
As much as the debate around the No. 1 overall pick continues, it’s got to be said that so does she. In her first season in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark has been nothing short of sensational as she has not only put historic numbers on the board, but she has done so quietly and without complaint.
Caitlin Clark breaks another record
On Friday night, the Indiana Fever went down 75-86 against the Las Vegas Aces at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was a tough loss for a team that has improved in recent weeks but it was certainly not for lack of trying. If there was one bright spot, however, it was Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking contribution. To be clear, Clark broke the WNBA’s all-time record for the most assists in a single season.
Having entered the game just four assists shy of tying the record which was set by Connecticut Sun star Alyssa Thomas with 316 assists in 2023, it was always on the cards for Clark who registered her 317th assist in the second quarter of the game when she up teammate Kelsey Mitchell for a bucket on an inbound pass.
The mark comes on the back of several other records that Clark has set during the last few months of what is her maiden campaign in the WNBA. Back in July, the former Iowa State star broke the single-game assist record by dropping 19 dimes on the Dallas Wings. Then, there was the WNBA’s rookie single-season assist record that she set on August 19th. It doesn’t stop there either as she also has more three pointers to her name than any other rookie in league history, becoming the first rookie to record multiple triple-doubles in the process.
Where the Fever are concerned, the team entered Friday’s game sitting on a 19-18 record and the sixth seed in the league. Currently on course for a playoff spot, the team will close out the regular season with a game against the Dallas Wings on Sunday, before going on the road for a September 19th date with the Washington Mystics.
