What is Barbora Krejcikova’s WTA rankings after winning Wimbledon 2024?
Barbora Krejcikova is the 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles champion after a hard-fought victory over Jasmine Paolini. The Czech star saw out a dramatic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win to clinch her second Grand Slam title.
Krejcikova and Paolini played out a thrilling final that swung between the two players. After falling to a 2-6 first set loss Paolini looked unrecognisable in the second, powering back to level the match with a 6-2 win of her own. In the third set Krejcikova squandered a number of championship points but finally wore down Paolini’s resistance to clinch the title.
The Czech moves up to tenth in the WTA world rankings with her Wimbledon victory, a huge jump from 32nd as she entered the tournament. The official update will be issued on Monday, July 15 but here’s how the WTA rankings will look after the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships...
Who are the recent women’s singles Wimbledon winners?
For 16 years the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, dominated the women’s Game and picked up 12 Wimbledon singles titles between them. But since Serena won her seventh and final Wimbledon title in 2016, the following seven singles winners have been seven different women.
Following on from Serena’s 2016 triumph, the women’s singles winners are: Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Ash Barty, Elena Rybakina, Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova. Including the final Williams’ win, that is eight different winners in eight years.
So why has the honours board in SW19 become so varied in recent years? In large part it is due to the struggles of the top female players to replicate their form at Wimbledon. Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina - the top four players - have won eight of the last nine majors but have managed just one Wimbledon title between them.
That victory came in 2022 when Elena Rybakina beat Ons Jabeur in three sets. Rybakina’s triumph was the only time that any of the top four players have reached the Wimbledon singles final. It’s brought a rare spell of unpredictability to the tournament, that was previously dominated by the Williams sisters, Steffi Graf (7 wins) and Martina Navratilova (9).
