Were Baker Mayfield’s comments about Tom Brady taken out of context? The Bucs quarterback thinks so
Was it a case of biting off more than you can chew or was it simply poor articulation? No matter how you cut it, the Buccaneers quarterback has found himself in what appears to be a war of words with the player whose shoes he’s filling, a man who also happens to be arguably the greatest quarterback to play in the NFL.
Baker Mayfield plays down spat with Tom Brady
You may have seen that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield turned some heads recently when he said that seven-time Super Bowl champion and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady’s time with the team was a “stressed out” period, an apparent reference to Brady’s championship mentality it would seem. You would have also seen our previous report in which Brady himself responded in kind while calling the Buccaneers’ 33-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles for FOX Sports on Sunday, giving a frank take during the broadcast itself as he stated that he thought “stressful was not having Super Bowl rings.”
What makes the scenario even more interesting is the fact that Brady, being a former signal caller for the said same team, had a preGame chat with Mayfield as he made the rounds among the Buccaneers’ players, some of whom he used to play with. With that as context, we come to Mayfield once again who has now indicated that his comments were not taken in the manner he meant them. “I think a lot of that got taken out of context,” Mayfield said. “None of it was personal by any means. It’s just what he demanded of the guys and that’s the aura of Tom Brady. And that’s what he did to bring a championship here. And so, nothing personal.”
To cement his point, Mayfield then went on to disclose what he and Brady spoke about before the start of the game. “Talking to him before the game, he’s obviously happy for me,” Mayfield said. “And he knows the guys. He knows how much I enjoy throwing to Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin] because he got to do the same. It’s fun to be able to talk about the same experience with a guy like that.” Was it smoothing over cracks? Perhaps but it got even more interesting when Mayfield was pressed.
After being told of Brady’s blunt response to his comments, Mayfield could only laugh before giving what appeared to be another evasive response. “Yeah, like I said. Lot of things got taken out of context. He did his own way and that’s why he has seven rings.” True that. At any rate, Mayfield was more than credible on the night as he threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns, a clear sign that he’s comfortable doing it his own way down south. At present, the Bucs are 3-1 following the win and will take on the Atlanta Falcons next in a divisional clash in Week 5 on Thursday Night Football.
