Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, now the head coach at Tottenham Hotspur, has taken on a up a summer role as a pundit for ITV during Euro 2024.

During his coverage of the Denmark versus Germany match, Postecoglou did not hold back in expressing his disdain for the current state of VAR technology.

The match saw a contentious moment when Germany were awarded a penalty following a VAR intervention. The decision came after a slight touch from a Denmark player’s hand, sparking a wave of criticism. However, it was Postecoglou’s impassioned reaction that truly captured the attention of viewers.

Known for his candid and forthright manner, Postecoglou was visibly agitated as he discussed the incident. He argued that the essence of the Game was being compromised by over-reliance on Technology. His frustration reached a peak when he mentioned the tendency of VAR to re-referee matches, a sentiment he articulated vehemently during the broadcast.

“If I hear one more person saying that the game isn’t being re-refereed, I’m going to blow up,” Postecoglou declared. His comments resonate with a growing faction within the football world that believes VAR’s interference is detracting from the natural flow and human element of the sport.

Many argue that while the Technology was introduced to assist referees and reduce errors, it has instead led to increased interruptions and controversial decisions. The penalty awarded to Germany in the Denmark match is a case in point, where the subjective nature of handball interpretations has once again come under scrutiny.

In his analysis, Postecoglou emphasised the need for a balance between Technology and the traditional officiating methods. He questioned whether the current implementation of VAR serves the best interests of the Game and its stakeholders.

The treble winning former Celtic boss had his issues with VAR back in his days in Glasgow. He was always willing to give the on field referee the benefit of the doubt but he couldn’t believe some of the decisions VAR got involved with.
