The New York Giants have released a new ‘Century Red’ throwback uniform to commemorate their 100th season.

The uniform takes inspiration from various designs worn over the Giants’ history, with the helmet coming from the 1938 season, the jersey from 1933 and the pants and socks both inspired by what was worn back in 1925.

As for the jersey, the Giants say that it commemorates the first ever NFL Championship Game, which was played between the Giants and Bears at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The numbers used on the back of the jersey are exact copies of what was used back then.

Tan pants have been included as “a throwback to the original ones worn during their inaugural season in 1925, when founder Tim Mara famously purchased the team for $500″.

The winged helmet stands out especially and is a commemoration of “Steve Owen, the winningest head coach in Giants history, [who] was credited with innovations such as the A-formation offense, umbrella defense, and the two-platoon system.”

And as an extra detail, the uniform will have a ‘100 Seasons’ patch, which the team say was “created to showcase the franchise’s rich History with the background shield inspired by the shape of the Polo Grounds, the team’s first home in 1925 – and with the zeros designed in the outline of Giants Stadium. At the base is a re-creation of the team’s classic skyline logo, representing every player who has worn the Giants uniform. The player is overlaid on a Football, which is named “The Duke” in honor of Wellington Mara and features eight laces to symbolize the team’s eight NFL championships.”

When will the NY Giants wear the throwback uniform?

The official press release from the Giants says that the team will wear their new uniform for “up to two games in 2024″, although they did not state for which exact fixtures the new uniform will be used.

Can you buy the ‘100 Seasons’ uniform?

The ‘100 Seasons’ uniform is not up for sale at the time of writing, although the winged helmet can be bought for $739.99 with the mini helmet priced much more reasonably, at $34.99.

In a press release, the Giants said that the design, “harkens back to the earliest days of the franchise featuring tan pants; red socks with blue and white stripes from the team’s inaugural 1925 season; red jerseys accented with blue from 1933, when the Giants played in the first ever NFL Championship Game; and an iconic winged helmet honoring the 1938 champions as the Giants became a cornerstone in the foundation of the league. All of the team’s 2024 jerseys will feature the team’s ‘100 Seasons’ patch.”

“I feel like it’s gritty and vintage,” linebacker Bobby Okereke told the Giants, “it’s a throwback to the 1920s, 1930s when they were out there just getting grimy. It’s a testament to all the guys who played before. They paved the way for us to play this great game.”
