Paulo Bernardo has recently departed Benfica’s training camp amidst Celtic’s ongoing negotiations to bring him back permanently, according to reports from Portugal. The midfielder, who was part of Benfica’s pre-season squad following his loan spell at Parkhead, is a key target for Brendan Rodgers.

While there was a buyout clause in his contract, Celtic felt it was too high for them to trigger and have gone about negotiating a fee with the Portuguese side as they look to secure Bernardo.

Ojogo has reported that Bernardo’s departure from Benfica’s training base, and his absence from the squad for a friendly against Celta Vigo, are tied to the active negotiations between the two clubs. This indicates that a deal and the move could be shortly in the offing.

Bernardo had some big moments for Celtic last season. While he wasn’t always a starter he still made his mark in several Glasgow Derbies, his goal in the New Year fixture and both assists for Adam Idah, one at Ibrox and the famous shot that was palmed out by Jack Butland to Idah, technically not an assist, but we’re giving it to the Portuguese star.

Celtic fly out to America on Tuesday for two weeks ahead of the new season. It would be ideal if they could get Bernardo on the original flight. However, any signings brought in after they take off will have to meet up with the team in America.
