This decision reverses an agreement that would have allowed 2,500 away supporters at each Game, starting with the upcoming match at Celtic Park. The agreement was contingent on both clubs installing safety nets in the away sections to prevent crowd trouble.

Rangers have faced significant stadium issues this summer and have not yet started the installation of the necessary netting, a process that requires planning approval from Glasgow City Council and significant preparation time. Despite assurances, no progress has been made, and no applications for the required safety installations have been submitted to the council, a concern they have failed to accept.

In response to Celtic’s decision, Rangers expressed disappointment and confirmed that they would not allocate tickets to Celtic fans for the New Year derby at Ibrox, citing the reciprocal nature of the initial agreement. The club insists it is committed to fulfilling its part of the agreement by the New Year fixture.

A statement on their website read: “RANGERS was today informed that Celtic will make no allocation for away fans for the September Old Firm Game.

“The allocation to be implemented by both clubs was clear and Rangers was taking all steps towards fulfilling that agreement.

“In the meantime, we can confirm that no away allocation will apply for the January Old Firm fixture at Ibrox. This is consistent with the reciprocity embedded in the agreement reached between the clubs and the SPFL.”

The lack of progress on safety measures at Ibrox has raised concerns about the sincerity of Rangers’ commitments, leading to Celtic’s decision to prioritize the safety and security of its fans by restricting away allocations until the agreed-upon safety enhancements are verifiably in place.

Rangers have shown this summer that they simply can’t be trusted when it comes to updates on Ibrox.
