Pep Guardiola admits Real Madrid players Ballon d’Or favourites
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is already back at pre-season training with his club. The Catalan coach is set to go up against Celtic in a friendly as they look to prepare for the 24/25 Premier League season.
Back in front of the press for the new campaign, the manager was quizzed on a variety of topics, including the Ballon d’Or, the state of the squad and selling Kevin de Bruyne.
De Bruyne ‘staying’ at City, says Pep
“Kevin is staying”, Guardiola said as he nipped the topic in the bud, interrupting an inquisitive journalist. Speculation has been rife regarding the Belgian’s future, with various media outlets reporting that he is top of the list for Saudi Arabian clubs looking to improve their squads.
De Bruyne himself did not pour water on the situation earlier in the year, admitting that “at my age, you have to be open to everything. There is talk of incredible money in what could be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that. At my age, you have to be open to everything. There is talk of incredible money in what could be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that.”
Guardiola was also asked about Rodri, who many have tipped as a potential Ballon d’Or winner this year, although his manager admits there are plenty of candidates.
“When I saw Spain I saw him and he was at the level he has been playing for many years. His consistency was good. Rodri, Aymeric Laporte, Ferran (Torres)... they were together and I am happy for them. There are a few candidates for the Ballon d’Or. (From) Real Madrid, Manchester City… I can’t deny how happy he would be. To be in the race is fantastic for him, his family, friends and of course Manchester City. We are so proud,” Guardiola told reporters.
“I am really excited for this season that is coming. I am really happy here. Like every season I needed a break definitely, but after that I recharge my batteries and I have the same energy as usual. I know the comPetition is coming and I am completely focused on that especially for my club,” Guardiola concluded. City will play Celtic, Barcelona, AC Milan and Chelsea in pre-season.
