But the player himself also felt it was inevitable, and his action at the end of the season back this up.

Having spent the previous season on loan at the Scottish club, Bernardo left a significant portion of his belongings in Glasgow, anticipating a possible return. On Thursday, CeltsAreHere met the midfielder when he revealed that he had instructed his agent to prioritise a permanent move to Celtic.

“I brought a lot of clothes and things and I kept it in storage because I didn’t know if I was coming back or not, so it makes it easier that I have them in Scotland this year” [Celtic TV]

Despite the lengthy negotiations that stretched across the summer, Bernardo’s focus remained singularly on Celtic.

“I just heard about Celtic, because when the market started I told my agent that I wanted to come back, so I don’t know if he had another option but I didn’t have any on my hands,” he told the site.

“I was patient but the things were going well, so it was okay to wait.”

The midfielder also shared details of a conversation with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at the end of last season.

“The manager was really happy with me last season. He told me that he didn’t know at the time what was going to happen with me, but he told me that he was really happy with me and I had a fantastic season and helped the team in a lot of moments, so I was really happy too.”

He’s arrived back in Glasgow and is looking to break into the midfield three, but he’s under no illusion how hard this will be. He’s penned a five-year deal with the Hoops and will be looking to become a regular feature in Rodgers’ side.
