Oh Hyeon-gyu’s Celtic journey has come to an end, with the South Korean striker signing a four-year deal with Belgian side Genk. The move, confirmed by the club today, brings to a close his relatively short stint in Glasgow, which began in January 2023 when he was brought in to replace Giakoumakis.

Oh’s tenure at Celtic never quite took off as expected. Initially seen as the backup to Kyogo, he found himself increasingly sidelined, particularly after Brendan Rodgers secured the loan signing of Adam Idah in January. Idah’s arrival proved pivotal; the Irish striker’s crucial goals ensured he became the true replacement for Giakoumakis, leaving Oh without a place in the squad.

The club’s focus now shifts to securing Idah on a permanent basis, a move that seems all the more critical following Oh’s departure. While media reports suggest the fee for Oh’s transfer is around £4.5m, a figure Stephen McGowan had been reaching for with others following his lead, our sources indicate that the actual figure is closer to £2.5m, essentially recouping the initial investment made for him.

Oh’s exit is the second of this window after Sead Haksabanovic made the move to Sweden. That’s two signings made under Ange Postecoglou that never hit the heights now moved on.

Celtic fans are closely watching what happens next with regards to incoming. Peter Schmeichel looks set to be the first signing of the window, but we’re hoping he and more will follow.

While Oh didn’t make it at Celtic, there’s every chance he could make his mark somewhere else and we wish him all the best.
