Kasper Schmeichel Answers Celtic Contract Renewal Question
Kasper Schmeichel took the hefty Celtic goalkeeping reigns from Joe Hart over the summer and has excelled since doing so. That was no more apparent than in Sunday’s win over Kilmarnock when the Dane stood out.
Schmeichel was easily the Hoops’ man of the match in the hard-fought victory in Ayrshire, making several crucial saves and remaining as classy as ever with the ball at his feet.
When he joined Celtic in the summer, the veteran signed a one-year deal with the option of another. Because of his performances in green and white so far, fans have been rightly speculating over whether he will extend his stay in Glasgow.
With an eye perhaps on the 2026 World Cup with Denmark at the end of next season, one imagines Schmeichel will want to stay and continually perform for the Hoops and get a Joe Hart-esque send-off in a few years. Football works in Mysterious ways, though, and nothing is certain or guaranteed.
Indeed, Schmeichel was recently asked about his contractual situation with Celtic while away on international duty with Denmark: “One thing at a time,” he told Tipsbladet.
“It is an option for another year, but we will take that at some point next year.”
In his brief few months with Celtic, Schmeichel has quickly become a fan favourite.
He has conceded just two goals from open play 11 Games into the Scottish Premiership campaign.
His distribution and how he plays with the ball at his feet has been a considerable upgrade on his predecessor, Hart, too.
The Parkhead faithful will be desperate for the Great Dane to put pen to paper in the new year.
