Jermall Charlo was arrested in Texas for driving while intoxicated
Jermall Charlo last fought in November 2023 against José Benavidez Jr. but is now in the headlines for a fender bender that turned south. A spokesperson for the Pearland (Texas) Police Department said that the former undisputed junior middleweight champion was arrested Monday night for crashing his Lamborghini Urus while intoxicated.
The accident occurred around 6:41 p.m. local time, and Charlo reportedly fled the scene after arguing with the other driver. Police stopped him at a traffic light about a mile away from the incident and after administering field sobriety tests, Charlo showed signs of intoxication and was arrested.
The WBC middleweight champion was charged with driving under the influence with an alcohol level greater than 0.15, which is nearly twice the legal limit in Texas (0.08), fleeing a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident with damage exceeding $200. Charlo’s lawyer said that there were no illicit drugs involved as he is preparing for his next fight.
Jermall has a perfect 33-0 professional record and has held the WBC Middleweight title since 2019. He has been open about struggling with mental Health issues and bipolar disorder, saying, “Depression, self-coNFLation, going from hot to cold really fast is shocking to you. Dealing with all kinds of cases of bipolar, being by yourself, thinking that you shutting the world out is gonna help you. But you need to be able to speak to someone and help you get past whatever you’re going through.”
Charlo was booked in at the Brazoria County jail and later released on a $9,500 surety bond. Charlo’s twin brother, Jermell, suffered a lopsided loss to Canelo Álvarez last September, and Jermall was originally the planned opponent for Álvarez last week in Las Vegas. When negotiations fell through, Álvarez faced fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia instead.
