Jason Wilcox best signings - ranked
Manchester United are reportedly set to enlist the help of Jason Wilcox as they look to restructure their recruitment set-up ahead of the new season.
The Southampton director of Football has been instrumental for the Saints this season and spent 11 years prior working through the ranks at Manchester City. His role as Academy Director at City saw him oversee the development of many stars, a skill that United will be keen to capitalise on.
Here are some of Wilcox's best signings, ranked:
5. Taylor Harwood-Bellis
After spending over a decade at Manchester City's academy system, Wilcox gained a real insight into the upcoming talent at the club.
In walks Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who joined Southampton on deadline day in the summer. The England youngster saw interest from a range of top-flight sides, but chose a move to St. Mary's thanks to Wilcox.
He's proven to be a real talent on the pitch, making 32 Championship appearances this season and bagging two goals.
The defender is versatile and will be hoping he can assist Southampton in gaining promotion before his loan ends.
4. Joe Rothwell
Wilcox managed to convince Joe Rothwell to make the south coast switch when he joined Southampton in January on loan from Bournemouth.
He's appeared for the Saints 10 times this season - just one appearance than he racked up in the Premier League in 2023/24. Adding real depth to the squad, Rothwell has bagged four goals and thoroughly impressed.
Rothwell's top-flight debut actually came against Southampton, when he came off the bench in the 77th minute at the Vitality in October 2022.
3. Flynn Downes
Excitement started to build when news that West Ham loanee Flynn Downes was to join the Saints, and rightfully so.
In a short space of time he has established himself as a key component in Southampton's midfield.
His ballwinning expertise have made him one of the most talked about midfielders currently plying their trade outside of the English top flight.
2. Phil Foden
Phil Foden splits opinion over whether he is one of the best players in the Premier League or not. No matter where you stand on this matter, it's clear that he has been a huge success story for the City academy.
The 23-year-old joined the club at Under-9 level, and has gone on to win five Premier League titles, a Champions League and two FA Cups, plus a number of England caps.
1. Cole Palmer
All eyes are on Chelsea star Cole Palmer this season, who has already scored 13 goals in 24 Premier League appearances.
Chelsea fans, you can thank Wilcox for your starboy. Aged 16, Palmer was set to be released from the Manchester City academy. However, Wilcox advocated for him to be offered a professional contract after being convinced by his ability.
The contract was arranged, despite doubts from others at the club, and Palmer has since rose to stardom. The 21-year-old definitely features on Wilcox's CV highlights.
