Former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac is a surprise candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, according to a report.

90min understands while Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is currently the leading contender for the job, an agreement has not been finalised and Liverpool are still hoping to interview three candidates.

The Daily Mail report that Kovac, who managed Bayern between 2018 and 2019, is 'under serious consideration' to fill the vacancy at Anfield.

The Croatian's representatives sounded out his availability to Premier League clubs during a recent trip to London, hoping to secure him a return to management having been sacked by Wolfsburg last month.

Kovac's short stint in charge of Bayern saw him claim three trophies, but they were notably eliminated from the 2018/19 Champions League by eventual winners Liverpool.

He was also the Bayern manager who oversaw their 7-2 victory away at Tottenham Hotspur in the group stage of the following Champions League campaign. However, he left the Bavarian giants by mutual consent following a 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt a few weeks later.

After leaving Bayern, Kovac was appointed as the head coach of Monaco in the summer of 2020. He led them to the Coupe de France final and qualification to the play-off round of the Champions League during his only full season at the helm, stepping down midway through the 2021/22 campaign.

Kovac's most recent job was at Wolfsburg, where once again he departed in his second season. During his one full campaign - the 2022/23 season - Wolfsburg missed out on Europa League qualification by just one point to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen. He has since been replaced at the Volkswagen Arena by former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
