Jamal Murray’s reported contract details with the Denver Nuggets: Here’s what we know
With the star point guard set to hit free agency next summer, it’s clear that the Nuggets have taken the step to avoid any possible hang-ups next year. With that, the franchise has taken a significant step towards maintaining its championship-winning core.
Jamal Murray is staying in Denver
According to reports this week, Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets are expected to agree to a four-year, $209 million maximum contract extension this offseason. Murray was of course one of the team’s central figures during their march to an NBA championship in the 2022-23 season. With an average of 26.1 points and 7.1 assists during that playoff run, Murray was without a doubt one of the most influential players on the team especially when it came to the Western Conference Finals sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA Finals victory over the Miami Heat.
Since being drafted by the Nuggets with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best point guards in the NBA. Alongside Nikola Jokic, he has formed one of the league’s most dangerous duos, one that seemingly had no trouble in bringing a title to Denver for the first time in franchise History. It should be said that it’s nothing new as Murray has proven to be a go-to player on numerous occasions over the last five years. Indeed, since the 2018-19 season, he has been the fifth highest-scorer in the playoffs. If you’re wondering the four players ahead of him are Luka Doncic, Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, and Trae Young all of whom are All-Stars, something Murray has never been. To that end, some have questioned his value but make no mistake, we’re talking about one of the most solid players in the league at present and for quite some time now.
This past season, Murray averaged 21.2 points and 6.5 assists while shooting a career-high 42.5% from three-point range which is to say he continues to improve on an already impressive contribution. As he prepares to enter what will be his ninth season he will look to continue that good run. One thing that will likely encourage him, aside from his extension, is the fact that two-time MVP Nikola Jokic and Michael Porter Jr. will be going nowhere. On the other hand, reports suggest that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope just might, meaning the Nuggets will have a significant hole to fill should that prove to be the case. Regardless, Murray is set to continue and that’s good news.
