Girl Scout Founder’s Day (October 31st)
With more than 100 years of History, the Girl Scouts of the USA have been encouraging girls to grow in their skills, cooperation and passions. With an emphasis on investing in girls and young women who can lead well into the future, the founding of the Girl Scouts has made a huge impact on millions of women in the United States.
History of Girl Scout Founder’s Day
Almost everyone knows about Girls Scout cookies! But this day is about raising awareness for the organization that is behind the cookies, and the founder of it all.
Celebrated on the birthday of the American founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scout Founder’s Day offers an opportunity to look back at the roots of this important organization.
Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860 and was affectionately known by the nickname “Daisy”. Inspired by Lord Baden-Powell who founded Boy Scouts, Low originally joined the movement of Girl Guides in England in 1911. Upon returning to the US in 1912, Low started Girl Guides in Savannah, Georgia, USA. Three years later, the name was changed to Girl Scouts and Low remained active in the movement until her death in 1927.
Over the years, it has become a tradition for Girl Scouts and Girl Scout troops to celebrate Founder’s Day in honor and commemoration of Juliette Gordon Low each year. Now Girl Scout Founder’s Day is here to get people more connected with this important organization and the woman who started it all.
