The most-anticipated sequel is finally set to see light of the day. Nearly two decades after the release of the original, The Devil Wears Prada has now been greenlit for a sequel by Disney. Here’s all you need to know about the production timeline, cast and more. It’s time you pull yourself up by the hemline of your Seven7 jeans and gird your loins.

Since making its debut almost twenty (!) years ago, the Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep vehicle based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name has earned nothing short of a modern cult classic status, bringing in new fans from across a broad spectrum of generations ranging from millennials to even Gen Z film buffs. That’s no surprise of course, when considering how the movie combines a truly star-studded ensemble cast with a plot that manages to measure out in equal portions of humour, melodrama, and romantic tension.

That’s before we even talk about its fashion, what with the film’s almost $1 million wardrobe assembled by renowned stylist Patricia Fields (of Sex and The City and Emily in Paris fame) reportedly being one of the most expensive ever curated in cinema History.

The Devil Wears Prada sequel enters early development

Naturally, die-hards have been hoping for a sequel, considering its mammoth box-office success and that Weisberger has written not just one, but two books based on The Devil Wears Prada since 2003: Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns and When Life Gives You Lululemons.

Well, you may not have to hold your breath for much longer as Puck magazine has confirmed that a television sequel for the film has apparently entered early development by the people at Disney. According to fashion journalist Lauren Sherman, this next instalment in the movie’s canon is expected to revolve around the decline of the magazine industry against the advent of social media and content creators in the past few years.

In an ironic twist of fortunes, Streep’s fearsome Wintour-inspired Miranda faces the sunset of her career at the helm Runway magazine, which has since plunged considerably from grace owing to the decline of print media. At this point, it remains dependent on advertising dollars from a luxury conglomerate where her former assistant, Emily, now works as a high-powered executive. No word on Andrea’s prospects at this point in time, but we don’t doubt that she will play a central role in the plot all the same.

As far as finer details are concerned, the studio has kept mum on whether any members of the original cast will return. This is especially because Anne Hathaway had previously expressed skepticism about whether a sequel would ever come to light, during an interview with E! back in March. “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen,” she said.

For now, if you’re looking to satiate your rekindled embers for The Devil Wears Prada, you may want to consider catching the musical adaptation of the movie that is being staged in London’s West End, starring Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly.
