Former Celtic centre-half Eoghan O’Connell helped Wrexham gain back-to-back promotions at the weekend.

An emphatic 6-0 win over Forest Green secured the Welsh club’s place in League One next season after they made it into League Two from the National League at the end of last campaign.

O’Connell has been a key contributor to his team having made 46 appearances in all comPetitions since joining Wrexham from Charlton at the end of January 2023.

His name is one of the first on the teamsheet at the heart of the defence and having been with the club for well over a year, the 28-year-old has noticed a key comparison between Wrexham and a team he spent much of his youth at, Celtic.

He said: [The Athletic] “I also think back to Halifax away last year and the numbers we took [4,500 fans made the trip]. We got beat but I remember thinking in the warm-up it was similar to a Celtic away day when I was there as a younger player.

“I do think with the faNBAse, the people involved running the club and the owners, the world is your oyster, really.”

In terms of becoming a global brand and building a worldwide faNBAse, the future is bright for Wrexham.

They do not have the same historical success as Celtic, but in the modern day, they are practically renowned despite being in England’s lower leagues. What the next phase of their development as a club may look like is intriguing.
