The 2024 MLB season is upon us already and with the biggest off season news the record setting contract of Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to make waves in the NL West. Even without the two way phenom on the mound, his bat in at the DH spot should be a huge shot in the arm for the Blues.

Covering that gap left in the rotation with Ohtani’s second elbow surgery, Los Angeles doubled down on their Japanese investment, picking up the hottest arm on the market in Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Their opponents, and fierce NL rivals, the San Diego Padres have not been sitting on their laurels either, making a splash by trading three prospects to the Chicago White Sox for ace right-hander Dylan Cease. Announcing the deal almost as they lifted off for South Korea, the Padres have bolstered what was already one of the best rotations in the game.

Seoul Series prediction

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are coming off of a low run, dropping two of their last three games in the Cactus League. While it is tempting to see that as an issue, the purpose of Spring Training is as much to try out new players, new combinations, and see if they gel rather than to rack up wins, so it could well be that those two losses, to Cleveland and Seattle, are nothing more than a tough practice session to be learned from. The real test will be the coming games agains Team Korea and the KBO’s Kiwoom Heroes and whether or not the Dodgers are able to shake off the jet lag and play ball when it counts.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have been tight through the Cactus League, winning two of the last three games and tying the other (yes tied ball games are allowed in Spring Training). Overall, they have looked like a team who are used to working together, playing off each others’ strengths, and you have the sensation that the losses in free agency are either being dealt with or are something that the front office has well in hand. The shock acquisition of Dylan Crease in the last day has increased their stock around the league, although it remains to be seen if he actually gets any playing time in Seoul.

On paper at least, the Dodgers have the stronger lineup. And Los Angeles, perhaps more than any other team in MLB is a grinding, winning machine, at least in the regular season. They pride themselves on the 100-plus win season and will want to get off on the right foot with a quick series sweep. Both teams have put up big numbers in the Cactus League, but that was the apPetizer, and this is the main course. We are actually going to hedge our bets here and predict a split, with each team winning a Game, and both by big margins. Nothing close. Dodgers will blow out the Padres and then the Padres will turn the tables in Game two.
