Checking In: The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong is the luxury hotel brand’s second hotel in the metropolis. Luxurious and centrally-located with unparalleled city views, this is the premier establishment for discerning Travellers looking to be be immersed in the Pearl of the Orient.
Equipped with 285 rooms, The Ritz-Carlton in Pudong occupies the top 18 floors of the Shanghai IFC Tower I. Referencing the first “golden age” of the city, interior designs by renowned architect César Pelli and renovations by Richard Farnell interpret 1930s Shanghai Art Deco with a contemporary spin. While offering sweeping views over The Bund, the hotel has the most intact collection of Art Deco architecture in the world.
Location
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong is strategically located along the banks of the Huangpu River, providing guests with breathtaking views of the iconic Shanghai skyline, including landmarks such as the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Tower. On the day of my visit, artist KAWS set up a massive installation on the other bank of the Huangpu River as part of his Holiday series. I was excited to see that it was clearly visible from every floor of the hotel thanks to its elevation.
The hotel is directly connected to the IFC mall which is filled with various luxury brand stores and dining options. A few steps away are the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Museum of Art Pudong which opened in 2021, and The Bund, ensuring that guests have easy access to some of the city’s most desirable experiences. Additionally, its central location makes it convenient for Business Travellers, as it’s close to the Lujiazui financial district.
Accomodation
The accommodations at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong are nothing short of luxurious. Each room and suite is meticulously designed, featuring contemporary decor that blends modern elegance and traditional Chinese elements. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide stunning views, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the city’s dynamic skyline. The attention to detail is evident, with plush bedding ensuring a restful sleep, while the spacious bathrooms, equipped with soaking tubs and rainfall showers, offer a spa-like experience. My recommendation would be the Pearl Tower View Suite which offers an eye-level view of the landmark and everything you would need for a comfortable extended stay.
Spa & Activities
The hotel’s spa is a sanctuary of relaxation, offering a wide range of treatments that incorporate both traditional techniques and modern therapies. Guests can indulge in massages, facials, and body treatments using high-quality products from ESPA and VALMONT. Furthermore, each of the 10 treatment rooms has stunning city views. The fitness center is well-equipped with state-of-the-art machines including a leg press, smith machine, benches, and cables, and the indoor pool, with its panoramic views, is perfect for a refreshing swim. Additionally, the hotel organizes various activities, such as guided tours of the city, various classes, and cultural workshops, allowing guests to engage with the local scene.
Food & Drink
The hotel houses several dining venues, including the Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Jin Xuan featuring seasonal ingredients and signature dishes celebrating local ingredients. For Western cuisine, the Italian restaurant Scena Di Angelo opened just last year, led by Michelin-starred chef Angelo Aglianó. A Sicilian by birth, Chef Angelo grew up by the Mediterranean seaside learning how to catch and prepare fish. His lifelong practice shines through in the carefully designed menu featuring seafood as the main ingredient. He also sources a variety of Italian pasta from Italy to present guests with authentic Sicilian creations. Must-tries include the sea urchin risotto and grilled sole with Sardinian caviar. In the morning, the space is transformed into an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet with a vast assortment of cuisine to choose from as well as an open kitchen for omelets and noodles, fresh juices, and pastries.
For casual refreshments and quick meetings, the AURA lounge is a perfect place to connect and unwind, serving a selection of fine wines, cocktails, and afternoon tea in an elegant setting. The highlight, however, lies on the 58th floor. FLAIR Rooftop is situated 258 meters above Shanghai, offering breathtaking sunset views in the heart of the city. Featuring a breathtaking rhombus-shaped metal lattice design with wood and stone accents, the atmosphere is further elevated with great music and delicious cocktails.
