Celtic Women Win Dramatic Sunday Cup Tie on Penalties
As Celtic’s men secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory on the road against Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon, the women were also in action.
Elena Sadiku took her side to face Glasgow City in the quarter-finals of the Sky Sports Cup.
After a tense 0-0 draw in 90 minutes, the match went to extra time. After another half an hour, the sides still couldn’t be separated, so a penalty shootout ensued.
Kelly Clark, Shannon McGregor, Murphy Agnew, and Natalie Ross all scored to send the Ghirls to the semi-finals on a drama-filled afternoon. Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty’s antics between the sticks in the shootout deserve credit, too: she saved two of City’s spot-kicks.
The match was the first of an arduous quartet for Celtic Women. Indeed, next up, they welcome top English outfit Chelsea to Celtic Park in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Sadiku’s side returns to league action the following Sunday when they face Rangers at New Douglas Park at midday.
Soon after the Glasgow derby, European action is back on the agenda as the Ghirls Travel down to Stamford Bridge for the second of their double-header against Chelsea.
High on confidence after yesterday’s shootout victory, Celtic will head to Parkhead on Wednesday with the hope of getting their first Champions League points of the season on the board.
