Bear Mountain Zoo Invites You to Come See The Bats of New York

One of my favorite things to do on a summer night is to spot the bats flying around at dusk. They dance around the sky like they are in a piNBAll machine with the single goal of eating bugs.

Bats are fascinating to some and terrifying to others. Unfortunately, many of us grew up afraid of bats because we were told they would get stuck in our hair and bite us. I won't deny it, that could happen however it is not likely it really is more of a superstition.

Bats are cute in their own little way. I once got to see a live bat up close when it ran into the windshield of my car and knocked itself out for a moment. It lay there just underneath the hood under the windshield wiper for a moment. Then it looked up a bit dazed, shook off, and flew off the hood of my car.

The encounter was wild because for one brief moment, the bat and I locked eyes and he or she had the sweetest face. It was only the size of a baseball until its wings opened and took off. I won't lie that was a bit startling.

So are you ready to learn more about bats and possibly see one up close? If so mark your calendar for the Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park are holding an event all about our friend the bat.

On August 16th at 7:30 PM you are invited to bring a flashlight and join the Museum's educators for a family-friendly event about bats. You will learn about the nocturnal life of bats. You will also be able to witness them flying around. There will also be bat crafts and Games.
