Austrian Grand Prix 2024 Schedule: When & Where Can You Watch The Next F1 Race In Hong Kong?
The long European leg of the Formula 1 2024 calendar got underway in Spain last weekend. Now the action shifts to the lap of the Eastern Alps in Austria. Arguably one of the most scenic races in the world of motorSports next in the F1 schedule, the Austrian Grand Prix 2024 will be a key event in determining the end-of-the-year results.
Before we start talking about its significance, here is a round-up of the important details about the Austrian Grand Prix:
- Date: 28 to 30 June
- Venue: Spielberg, Austria
- Where to watch: F1 TV
Back-to-back wins in June (in Canada and Spain) translate to Max Verstappen being unbeaten for nearly a month. Therefore, the reigning world champion would love to end June on a winning note as well. But that’s not the most important part about this race.
While he hasn’t been at his best, the Belgian driver maintains a Healthy lead of around 70 points over second-placed Lando Norris at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix. Verstappen has been beaten on quite a few occasions this season, so the margin for errors is slim for him. Likewise, the onus will be on Norris, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. to notch up as many wins as possible and try to close the gap in the Drivers’ Standings.
So who will take the top honours in Austria this weekend? Will it, once again, be the Verstappen show or will there be a twist in the tale? Only time will tell. In the meantime, to ensure you don’t miss out on the action, we bring you the schedule (dates) for the Austrian Grand Prix 2024, its venue and information about where you can livestream the races.
But before we get to that, join us to look at…
The history of the Austrian Grand Prix
The Austrian Grand Prix has had a patchy record.
While the inaugural race was held in 1963, it was a non-championship event without the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s (FIA) sanction. Therefore, the first time that the event was a part of the Formula 1 calendar was actually in 1964.
Inconsistency is synonymous with the Austrian race. After its first official F1 event in 1964, the Grand Prix was missing in action till 1970. The race was then held for 18 consecutive editions (1970-1987) following which it was again dropped from the F1 calendar for another decade. And its return in 1997 was short-lived too — the race lasted on the roster till 2003.
However, since its return in 2014, the Austrian Grand Prix has been a regular event on the F1 calendar.
Current world champion Max Verstappen holds the record for the most wins in the Austrian Grand Prix’s history with four victories. On the other hand, with seven wins, Scuderia Ferrari leads the pack with the most titles by a constructor side.
A close look at the schedule for the Austrian Grand Prix 2024
After a gap of nearly two months, the Sprint weekend will make a comeback at the Austrian Grand Prix. This will be the third Sprint race of 2024 after the Chinese and Miami Grand Prix. For context, the United States (Austin), Brazil (Sao Paulo) and Qatar (Lusail) will play host to the remaining Sprint races this year.
The Austrian Grand Prix will commence with the Practice 1 race on Friday, 28 June (6:30 PM HKT). This hour-long race will be followed by the Sprint Qualifying event later that day (10:30 PM HKT). The results of the Sprint Qualifying will set the grid for the Sprint race.
On Saturday, 29 June, all drivers will roll out on the Austrian circuit for the 100-kilometre Sprint race (6 PM HKT). Following the conclusion of the Sprint, the second session of the day will see the traditional Qualifying race (10 PM HKT). This qualifying event will finalise the grid for the main race of the Austrian Grand Prix 2024.
According to its schedule, the main race will be held on Sunday, 30 June (9 PM HKT onwards).
What is the venue for the Austrian Grand Prix?
The Austrian Grand Prix will take place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria, Austria. The circuit is 4.3 kilometres long and can host up to 105,000 spectators.
