Ubisoft’s much-anticipated game, Assassin's Creed Shadows, will hit the shelves on November 15, 2024.

Fans of the stealth-based series can start securing their copies as the pre-order window is now open. This upcoming instalment marks the return of the popular open-world franchise, and it is set to transport players to a location long-requested by the fanbase: feudal Japan.

After the release of the smaller-scaled Assassin's Creed Mirage in 2023, Ubisoft is returning with a more ambitious project. Initially known as Project Red, Assassin's Creed Shadows promises to deliver a vast and detailed Game world, one that explores the rich History and culture of 16th-century Japan.

Storyline and characters

The story will feature two playable characters, offering players diverse gameplay styles. Gamers will have the option to play as Naoe, a skilled and agile shinobi from the Iga province, or Yasuke, a powerful samurai inspired by a real historical figure. The two characters, initially at odds, eventually join forces to usher in a new era for Japan. Each protagonist will have their own personal storylines, filled with important historical figures from the period.

Set around 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima and 300 years before Rise of the Ronin, Assassin's Creed Shadows aims to build upon the already popular genre of Japanese historical games.

Gameplay

Ubisoft has yet to reveal all the Gameplay details, but it’s clear that Naoe will embody classic Assassin's Creed Gameplay, utilising stealth, parkour, and a range of tools like a grappling hook to navigate environments. Her approach will focus on stealth tactics, light manipulation, and using sound to outsmart enemies.

Yasuke, in contrast, will provide a more action-packed experience. Armed with a katana and powerful two-handed weapons, Yasuke’s combat style is designed for players who prefer direct confrontations and fast-paced action.

A significant new feature in Shadows is the exploration mechanic. Players can establish their own espionage network to uncover new areas and objectives. Allies can be recruited throughout the game, providing unique abilities to assist with missions. Additionally, players will be able to set up and customise their own hideout, expanding their network and training their allies.

Game World

Ubisoft promises a "huge open world" in Assassin's Creed Shadows, taking full advantage of its Anvil engine and the latest console technology to create a richly detailed world. With changing weather and seasons, players will experience a dynamic environment that impacts gameplay. Expect to see castle towns, bustling harbours, scenic villages, and tranquil landscapes offering plenty of variety and exploration opportunities.

The game’s world will evolve as players progress, with Ubisoft aiming to deliver a level of dynamism and immersion unmatched in previous titles.

Performance and display

Rumours suggest that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will run at 60FPS across all platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and even Mac, though the latter might require an M2 or M3 chip to fully experience the Game’s graphical potential. According to a post by Arabhardware on X (formerly Twitter), the Game will “have the best display quality on PS5 Pro.”

With pre-orders now live and a November release date set, Assassin's Creed Shadows is shaping up to be one of Ubisoft’s biggest releases in recent years, and the series’ long-awaited journey to feudal Japan has fans eagerly awaiting its arrival.
