Alcaraz booed by Wimbledon crowd over Euro 2024 comment
Carlos Alcaraz, normally the absolute darling of Wimbledon’s center court, got a different kind of reaction out of the mostly English crowd in his post-match on-court interview after beating Daniil Medvedev in fours sets (6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4) on Friday afternoon.
Alcaraz on England vs Spain in Euro 2024
Alcaraz was talking about Sunday’s final, where he’ll face either Djokovic or Musetti, when he said that it would be a “very good day for Spanish people as well with the Euro Cup”, and at that the crowd reacted immediately with a mix of boos, jeers and the occasional cheer.
Alcaraz quickly pointed out he hadn’t said he thought Spain would win, just that they were playing: “I didn’t say Spain will win, it will just be fun for Spaniards”. He then carried on laughing and with his usual trademark grin showed he was apologising profusely. This time he got his usual cheers and love from the crowd, who seemed entirely happy to forgive him. Alcaraz’s Wimbledon love affair goes on.
