Wilson out of Indy 500 after serious injury in practice shunt
Stefan Wilson is to miss Sunday's Indianapolis 500 after sustaining a vertebrae fracture in his high-speed accident with Katherine Legge.
On Monday afternoon in post-qualifying practice, the Dreyer Reinbold and Rahal Lannigan Letterman machines collided at Turn 1 of the 2.5-mile oval.
Both cars collided with the outside SAFER barrier, Wilson coming to a rest while the momentum carried Legge's car further down the track to Turn 2.
She was able to climb from the wreck unaided, but fellow Briton Wilson was extracted from the car and placed on a stretcher before being transported to nearby IU Health Methodist Hospital.
He was diagnosed with a fracture of the 12th thoracic vertebrae, and so will miss the 107th running of the race for which he had qualified in 25th.
The Dreyer and Reinbold team have yet to name a potential replacement for the driver who has a best finish of 15th in the race.
Legge will be forced to take to the RLLR back-up car with her primary having been written off as she looks to better her best place of 22nd in her first 500 in 10 years.
