Will quaterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars agree to a contract extension?

It would be an exaggeration to say that alarm bells are ringing, but the fact that the signal-caller has spoken openly about the situation does indicate that there is a lack of clarity in the scenario.

Trevor Lawrence wants certainty

While it would be a stretch to say there is a problem in Jacksonville, the fact remains that Trevor Lawrence is entering the fourth year of his career and with that, is eligible for an extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, there has been no indication that the franchise won’t make that happen, but conversely, there’s also been no indication that the former No. 1 overall pick who is currently under contract through 2024, will be granted his fifth-year option, which in turn locks him in until 2025. Again, there is no reason for alarm, but it is curious.

“There’s definitely been some conversations,” Lawrence said Tuesday when asked about the possibility of his extension. “As far as where that’s at now, it’s not really my focus. I’d love to, obviously, be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here and I love where we’re headed as an organization and feel like I’m just getting better every year. My best ball is definitely ahead of me. So, from that standpoint, obviously, yeah, that would be great. ...But, like you said, it’s going into my fourth year, it’s not like this is necessarily going to be my last season. There’s a lot that could happen. So, not really my focus right now. At the end of the day, my job isn’t going to change whether I get extended or not before this season. My job is to go win games and to be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win a Super Bowl. Even if I get the contract extension, that’s still my job.” Be that as it may, Lawrence did admit that despite his focus on preparation for the coming campaign, it wouldn’t hurt to see things finalized. “I can’t lie, obviously, it would be nice to have that done and feel good about it,” Lawrence said. “But, no, it’s not really the focus right now. I know where we’re at, I know where we’re heading, and I know what I have to do. There’s some improvements that I have to make going forward.”

Where his numbers are concerned, Lawrence is sitting on a record of 20-30 as the starter across the three seasons that he has played in the NFL. In his most recent campaign, the 24-year-old came in for criticism as the Jags lost five of their last six Games, resulting in the team missing a trip to the postseason. Though it is true that Lawrence himself struggled with injuries, he did take a considerable amount of the backlash. That said, there is no doubt about the talent that the former Clemson star is among the best prospects that we’ve seen in a long time. Expect to see his extension being secured in the near future.
